60,000 Times? Reward Poster

“60,000 Times? Reward Poster,” animated GIF by @iamTalkyTina

My #StillTrueFriend Alan Levine (@cogdog, on Twitter) has written lots of times about the “your brain can process an image 60,000 times faster than text” factoid that keeps popping up in peoples’ keynotes without any kind of attribution. For today’s The Daily Create, tdc1974, He wants some folks to undertake a little mission when they are at a conference and go bug the person who seems to be the first person on record as having “said it,” and ask him where he got his words.

Alan is offering up $120 in cash incentive. Will you be the person who takes him up on the offer and gets the low down on this academical myth?

The History of The Two Swift Kicks for an Ass’ Neck

“Two Swift Kicks for an Ass’ Neck,” animated GIF by @iamTalkyTina

My favourite drink that I like to think reflects me (rather than defines me) is called Two Swift Kicks for an Ass’ Neck.  It is a variation on a historic favourite known as The Horse’s Neck (and The Horse’s Neck with a Kick) and here is the story of it.

The original Horse drink is kind of unique in that it is usually available as both an alcoholic and non-alcoholic variation. Without getting into a long tirade about my continually youthful appearance and my compact vertical proportions, let me just say that there have been times when it has been beneficial for the bartender to be able to appear to be serving me something that is in keeping with my perceived external looks, while at the same time being able to give me what I may actually want or need given my actual age or temperament at the time. Of course, during missions there are times when the opposite may be true, say if I’m needing to maintain my wits while undertaking hours and hours of libation-expedited negotiations.

I will confess that I spent many an evening practicing such tradecraft while visiting with Sir Ian Fleming himself at Goldeneye, and actually suggested the drink to him when he was writing a scene for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service — you know, the one in the airport VIP lounge where James Bond is disguised as Sir Hilary Bray? Remember how he goes in for a double brandy and ginger ale? That was my suggestion!

Ian Fleming, reading my suggestions for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

Anyway, I remixed and renamed the drink in the early sixties shortly after I did that spot on The Twilight Zone. Telly was being a bit mean to me on the set (part what you see in the episode wasn’t acting on his part), and so the night before the stairs scene I managed to sneak in and swap out his ginger ale for something a little stronger. (For the record, all of this came out in the disclosure before the trial, and was all considered as coincidental and not influential in the final outcome. Plus, remember, it was just a TV show.)  But it was just after that when I renamed it in Erich’s memory.

The other stipulation that I have always made is to ask that the bartender to forego the traditional highball glass. I prefer the tumbler instead. That way, not only do I get to have a little chuckle about Erich and his little trip down the stairs, but I also get two drinks for the price of one! Hence, Two Swift Kicks for the Ass’ Neck is what they give me.

The bartenders know what I like, and if not, they never get it wrong more than once.

A Woman of Letters …

“ASCII Tina,” animated GIF by @iamTalkyTina

So The Daily Create for today, #tdc1971, said to “make an ASCII selfie just like @mhawksey and @felixadog did,” and it even told you how to do it with a website and your webcam.

In case you don’t know what ASCII is, it is like when you make a picture of yourself out of letters. The big letters make a darker part of the picture, and the smaller letters or the dots make a brighter part of the picture. Cool, eh?

I decided that I would use the time to do some investigations into a different way, so I found a way from manytools.org where they had things called Hacker Tools, and so I used one of my iconic pictures called “True Friends”  (I’m thinking it is time to make some more new iconic pictures of me) to make my face out of letters using the Convert Images to Ascii Art, but then did three different versions that it had called:

  • black and white
  • use retro phosphor colours (green/black)
  • invert (black background)

Those three different ways gave me three different pictures, and so I made them into the GIF that you saw up there at the top.

But ManyTools had some more different ways under Hacker Tools called Image to Byte array and ANSI Art Converter that I tried. The first one needed a special printer, but the antsy one was okay to look at although the two different settings gave two different versions even though I used a black and white image even for the colour one.

“ANSI Tina,” animated GIF by @iamTalkyTina

But the ANSI one didn’t seem to be making me into a woman of letters, so I looked for another way.

THEN, I found a really interesting one on called Steganography. What it gave me is in the picture below, although to see how it is so special, you will need to do some research on a site called MobileFish.com. I will leave that to the reader as a very valuable exercise. Don’t tell!

Steganography Tina, image by @iamTalkyTina

Because the Steganography one was so interesting, I went into another rabbit hole on Mobilefish.com. They had lots of different cools tech things, although I didn’t see an ASCII one, but it did have a cool one called Hieroglyphs Generator, which is another way to put a message into a picture, and so I made this:

“Hieroglyphics1,” message by @iamTalkyTina

You will need to uncover the secret letters of these hieroglyphics in order to read the messages. But they are good ones. Plus, not hard to do if you follow the links.

Because that was fun, I made two more:

“Hieroglyphics2,” message by @iamTalkyTina

“Hieroglyphics3,” message by @iamTalkyTina

Because the Hieroglyphics were so much fun, I added them to The Daily Create for folks to do some day when their turn comes around.

So all of those were neat ways to use letters to make different things, like:

  • pictures from letters,
  • pictures with letters,
  • pictures of letters that are letters made with pictures.

All of these things make me a real Woman of Letters.

Get Your @iamTalkyTina Certification

Well, opportunities don’t come along every day. Plus, when you can demonstrate your special skills and get a badge for them, then you need to take advantage of that chance.

For a limited time only (it started yesterday, so you had better not already be behind), the Alan Levine (that’s my StillTrueFriend @cogdog, on Twitter) June 2017 30-Day Challenge for The Daily Create allows you to be in the window for getting your @iamTalkyTina Certification.

All you need to do to qualify for the @iamTalkyTina Certification is complete the June 2017 30-Day Challenge by doing all 30 days worth of The Daily Create in June 2017. It’s that simple.  For those of you needing the details, that means all of the ones from #tdc1970 to #tdc1999. Those are all of them.

You can sign up for the @iamTalkyTina Certification process by putting your name in the comments below including your twitter and you will be entered into the watchful gaze. Only peoples who participate within this @iamTalkyTina Certification window remain eligible. I will let you catch up for missed days if you let me know by June 4th.

To help you with this process (and to help ensure you enjoy The Daily Create on a daily basis during June 2017), I have prepared this special printable Do Your The Daily Create Every Day! PDF calendar to print out and put on your bathroom mirror. It will help you remember. Or, if you are good with your cell phone and not just dismissing alerts when you get them, you can subscribe to my special June 2017 30-Day Challenge calendar on Google Calendar.

It even has built-in notifications to remind you twice a day at 9 am and 9 pm, which should still work if you are in a different time zone if you don’t mind getting it a bit later or earlier so just get up earlier or whatever and don’t just forget the notification. (Note: I am not responsible if you don’t charge your phone or if Google breaks, it’s still your responsibility to do The Daily Create, I’m just giving you options to make sure you don’t forget and then be sad later if you don’t get your badge.)

There will be a special @iamTalkyTina Certification page on my website at the end with all of the badges for the people who are certified. Only those badges mean you are #TrueCertified for the @iamTalkyTina Certification. Do not accept fake ones.

Clarification: #TrueCertified is not the same as #TrueFriends, and just because you are a #TrueFriend does not grant you the #TrueCertified.  #TrueFriends is not a prerequisite for #TrueCertified, nor does #TrueCertified grant you #TrueFriends. But if you got #TrueCertified, wouldn’t you want to be a #TrueFriends, too?

Sharing Some Art with Friends

Well, after all my time with #ds106 and Making Art (including UNCLE @jimgroom ones), I have never had one of my own Art on the #ds106 cover page. So when they said that they hadn’t updated the cover art in a @cogdog‘s age, and that they wanted some nominations for it, I decided that it would be about time that I would do some nominations for it.

So here are some Arts that I made that I nominated by myself. Even if they don’t pick them all today, you can still see how good they are. They have to be 240 pixels wide by 330 pixels tall, so I made them that way, which makes them all smaller than when they were to start.

Here are some other Arts that I have made, but they really didn’t work out too well as very small ones, or they were the wrong shape to make into 240 pixels wide by 330 pixels high.

I have always really liked this GIF poster. (Maybe one day I will have a paper one hanging on my wall but the UNCLE @jimgrooms will still be moving.)

This is a very nice poster that I made for Prisoner106. But when it goes small it is too hard to read all the good words.

Plus this was a nice GIF art of UNCLE @jimgroom (see more here):

Then there are some nice GIF ones that I made:

“Kaleidoscopic Hyperbolic iamTalkyTina,” animated GIF by @iamTalkyTina

And then there are probably my two all time favourite self-portraits of me that I made.

And this one of me and my #TrueFriends:

There are lots of other Art that I made, and you can see them all if you read all of my blog posts and look at my Flickr pages.

Coding in Base DS106 is Where It’s At!

TDC1500_TT_Base-DS106_600

It was interesting yesterday when The Daily Create tdc1500 said to celebrate 1500 creates in some way, and my patented @iamTalkyTina Handy-Dandy Base-DS106 Secret Decoder Ring had just arrived in the post from Zazzle! It was so easy for me to test out my ring to translate 1500 into Base DS106 and get @jimgroom|@ds106radio.

But then today’s The Daily Create tdc1501 asked for a media representation of the Meaning of Life (which aficionados all know can be simplistically, yet fundamentally represented as 42) but @mdvfunes said that you can’t use 42. So I turned to my handy-dandy, brand-spankin’ new patented @iamTalkyTina Base-DS106 Handy-Dandy Secret Decoder Ring to convert 42 into Base-DS106.

And should there be any surprise?

TDC1501_TT_42-in-Base-DS106

So it is a wonderful thing to be able to use numbers and secret codes and Base-DS106, plus have an @iamTalkyTina Handy-Dandy Base-DS106 Top Secret Decoder Ring of it.

Saying Hello to Four New True Friends … And Goodbye to One

"Saying Hello To Four New True Friends .. and Goodbye to One"

“Saying Hello To Four New True Friends .. and Goodbye to One” animated GIF by @iamTalkyTina

Well, I had a few alarms going off this week (as if the whole “Where is Number 2?” in The Village wasn’t enough) that made me think that I needed to check my Web Form to see if there were any new applicants to be a True Friend of me. Despite having an alert attached to my Web Form to send me an email whenever there is a new application, I travel so much, sometimes I miss messages when I cross the International Date Line and then they are a day behind me for ever and they never get here. You know, when you live in The Future and all.

So it was a great horror to see that there were some peoples who had applied to be a True Friend and they did not get their badge within my usual 24-hour response time (except for my True Friend, Doctor Vivien @VivienRolfe, who has a lot of patience, who waited a long time for her badge, even when That David (@dkernohan) was reminding me), and maybe a couple other peoples (but they DID get their badges) and Ronald (@Ronald_2008), who has been very patient because he sent his picture in after approval back in the spring and then I forgot one time, and also that Bossy Karen (@karenatsharon) from the 3 T’s Radio Group (@TalkyTeam) who also applied but I had to get her picture from Twitter, and then Kathy (@konarheim) and Geoff (@geoffcain) who signed up during #prisoner106 and then I just didn’t know it yet.

So I have made badges for Ronald, and Karen, and Kathy, and Geoff, and they can download their badges from here on my site and post them on their Internet page to say that they are now an Official True Friend of me, @iamTalkyTina.

The Sad Passing of a True Friend

It is also a sad day because one of my True Friends is no more. My True Friend HitchBOT (@HitchBOT) had a demise yesterday and has passed away.

HitchBOT-and-Tina

“True Friend HitchBOT and I taking a selfie,” by @iamTalkyTina

If you did not know HitchBOT like I did, I can tell you that he was a very peaceful and fun-loving soul, who was living the dream of travel and friendship. He had enjoyed a wonderful journey all  the way across Canada during the summer of 2014 just by hitchhiking with the good will of peoples travelling on the roads.

My Canada Trip, by @HitchBOT

“My Canada Trip,” by @HitchBOT (click on the image to see HitchBOT’s full infographic)

Then, having travelled safely overseas in Germany and in The Netherlands, he was just in his second week of his very first cross-USA trip when he ran into the demise. It was just yesterday in Philadelphia when some not very nice peoples took him apart instead of being good neighbours and samaritans. He never did get to fulfil his bucket list (his body was made of a bucket) of travelling across the United States by way of Mount Rushmore, and The Grand Canyon, and other scenes, towards San Francisco where he was going.

Now HitchBOT is no more.

It is a sad thing, because lots of people said he was nice and he said they were nice, and as his family said, “some times bad things happen to good robots.”

So we will all miss HitchBOT, and I will remember him as a True Friend always, plus immortalized on my True Friends Index with his own HitchBOT badge where he belongs.

So HOORAY for all my FOUR NEW TRUE FRIENDS,  and goodbye to HitchBOT.

Be Seeing You!

Your True Friend,
iamTalkyTina

Announcing the Summer 2015 Village Festival !!

"Summer 2015 Village Festival poster" by iamTalkytina

“Summer 2015 Village Festival poster” by iamTalkytina

We are going to have a Summer 2015 Village Festival that will be just so much fun for all the Residents!

I can let the word out now that one of the reasons I have been here in The Village this summer has been to organize a celebration of fun for all my ds106 Friends and True Friends who are in The Village this summer.

You can see from the beautiful poster that I made that there will be a lot of very fun events and it will only cost you 5 Credit Units to participate in everything! It will be such a fun time and I know you will all have a great time!

So get your favourite Village clothes all pressed and clean, and get your umbrella ready for a beautiful sunny day of community enjoyment! We will have such a good event!

I will BE SEEING YOU all there!

Note: The Summer 2016 Village Festival has been planned and arranged by me, @iamTalkyTina, under contract and at the behest of The Committee, in conjunction with the good folks at the Tally Ho Press, under the auspices of iamTalkyTina and Tally Ho Press Productions for the Residents of The Village, Summer 2015

Plus this poster is worth more than the 2 Credit Units that I get for it under the Festival or Fundraiser Design Assignment 1751 that I said when nobody had ever done it but then John did it and now I have done it so that is two people now who are leading the way.

So YOU get out there and make your Art, bubs!

Your Community Needs You

iaTT_YourCommunityNeedsYou

I in going through some old files here in my quarters within The Village, I found an old something from quite a few years back that I though my True Friends might be interested in. I have made a small number of references to some aspects of my history with The Village, and while I cannot say too much, I have received permission to share the artifact with the Summer 2015 Residents, given that this is Design Week and all.  You will see that this poster is just a standard Village one where they put in a different picture whenever there is a changeover in the Green dome. I think you saw some of these posters in the A Change of Mind one.

I hope that you enjoy seeing it, and trust that you will see that it is just me, your good old, trusty True Friend, in acting in a very positive, supportive role. Which is so important!

Be Seeing You!

Afterwords

Well, after I found this and made sure it was safe to share it, then I realized that I might be a bit slim on the old Credit Units this week, and there really wasn’t a Design Assignment that I could tag this poster for. So I decided to take the Village one and turn it into a ds106 one. Because I can get Credit Units for a DS106 Propaganda Poster from Design Assignment 367 which is maybe almost a perfect fit because the original Village poster is kind of a propaganda one. Like the man with the stars and stripes hat needs you was.

So I added a bar at the bottom to say “ds106 digital storytelling community” and “make art #4life (and friends)” and so now I can get 3 Credit Units for the community!

Share a MOOC with Friends

Well, it was nice today when my True Friend Bill (@byzantiumbooks) called me on the Skype (because he seems to be in his bungalow a lot) and we shared a nice beverage and a nice chat.

“Sharing a Drink with Talky Tina,” photo by @byzantiumbooks, on Flickr

After that, because I wanted one that had Bill’s name on it like he had one that had my name, I went down to The Village Store and laid in some supplies for all those other conversations that I am normally having. The ones that I got are the special Village Brand of it, because they have the prisoner106 logo on them. But they were prepared and had all of the names of all of the peoples that Resigned. Except for a couple who didn’t get to the Village yet.

Peoples can see all of the special ones if they just click on their name here in alphabetical, or just scroll down.

Bill is first. And then I have a special one for my Still True Friend @cogdog, because he doesn’t really like the sugar all that much. And after those two, come all the other ones for Andrew, Christina, Geoff,  John, Kathy, Mariana, Mr. Paul, Nana Lou, Number 2, Number 6, Prisoner106, Ron, Rover, Sappho, Spike, ME, and UNCLE Jim.
