Oh no!!

The ds106.us server was down today. For a long time. One of the unicorns got in touch with me on my iPhone, and we started surfing the web, trying to track down the missing ds106 rainbows.

We searched and searched. We found some of the rainbows. And we tried to get them heading back towards the server.

Perhaps you can help the unicorns and the rainbows? Make an animated GIF celebrating the behind the scenes work that keeps the ds106.us server happy. Again, this was an assignment before there was an Animated GIF category — found hiding in the Design Assignments category as @cogdog‘s wonderful Design Assignment 842: Rainbows and Unicorns in the Server Room.

Be sure to tag your post appropriately so that it syndicates into the correct assignment page.

    Hello Super True Friend!

I love your GIF. It is very, very beautiful and nice. And I wonder how you can make a GIF with all those many movements because it must take like 100 layers or something. Then your GIF file will be very big, maybe?

I am SO happy that there are unicorns finding rainbows for the ds106 server, and though I may not have time to do this assignment, I salute them! And you, for helping. Thank you!

      Hello, STF Christina!

Yes. I made a GIF with a lot of frames (81 frames), and it does have lots of pretty colours and is nice. It has 19 layers in it, although because it was so big I made it simpler and only used 16 of them, leaving out one layer that was black and two rainbows that weren’t quite as nice as the other three rainbows. Because the ds106 site was hiding, I had to do the GIF late at night after my bedtime and so I realized this morning that I forgot to put in my attributions of where the pictures came from. And maybe I should write up a little bit of how I did it. So I will make a post about making my GIF and tell a little bit about frames and layers in Photoshop. Because it has a thing that makes it a bit easier to go from 19 (or 16) layers and get to 81 frames that makes it easier than a harder way.

I think I will be seeing you very soon. Todd has been in touch with me and says it will be any day now!

Yay! I am so glad I will be seeing you soon! And it would be great if you could write up a blog post about layers and frames, because for me that would be helpful. In GIMP all they ever talk about is layers, and I don’t know what layers vs. frames are. And I need to learn more and more things!
